What Could Be Going On if Your Jaw Only Hurts on One Side?

With some dental issues, your jaw will hurt all the way around or on both sides. With some conditions, though, you may feel pain only on one side of your jaw. There are a number of different things that can cause jaw pain on one side of your face. Here are a few of the issues that could be causing it.

Bruxism is the medical term for grinding your teeth. Some people grind their teeth while they sleep without even realizing it. This can cause your teeth to wear down, opening them up to bacteria and infection. It can also cause your gums to get infected and wears on the jaw joints. Sometimes bruxism does result in pain only on one side of your face, especially if a tooth or the gums on that side of the face are infected.

TMJ Disorders

The temporomandibular Joint or TMJ is the joint that controls the jaw. Some TMJ disorders do only affect one side of the jaw or the other, while some affect both sides. The pain may even change sides depending on the disorder.

Abscessed Tooth

If you have an abscessed tooth on one side of your mouth, it can cause jaw pain. An abscessed tooth occurs when the tooth cracks or wears down to the point that the dental pulp is exposed and becomes infected. The infection can then move into the gum and even the bone itself, causing severe pain.

Bone Infection

It’s also possible that the bone in your jaw can become infected in other ways. This infection, called osteomyelitis, can cause extreme pain, fever, and swelling. The bacteria that cause this infection can enter the bone following surgery, an injury to the jaw, or poor oral hygiene.
